Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. Aunt Denise worked as a nurse who stayed overnight so that she could have the chance to learn about art theatre or literature. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as an avenue for action. DuVernay was also taught by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. Even though DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summers and was later inspired to create a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay was a college student when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of broadcast journalism. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash at the home that belonged to a member of the jury. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was given she decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a new publicist at a studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999.
